An estimated 1,200 bags did not make their flights due to glitches with the baggage handling system at Thailand's new international airport over the weekend (7-8 October).

Somchai Sawasdeepon, vice president of the Thai airport authority Airports of Thailand, said that the computerised system went down for an hour on Saturday, requiring the airport to call in 50 soldiers to manually direct 6,700 bags to outgoing flights.

According to The Associated Press the airport, which opened on 28 September, has had to deal with persistent problems with its computerised luggage sorting system.

It was reported that more than 25 domestic and international flights were affected by the problem, including flights operated by Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific, Vietnam Airlines, China Airlines and Bangkok Airways.
