Nevertheless, it always pays to use common sense and it’s worth remembering you are likely a lot richer than the average Thai – don’t flaunt it.

A bigger problem are the various types of scams and stealth crime that you will likely encounter – watch out in particular for smooth talking con artists and talented pickpockets that operate in crowded conditions such as markets and the Bangkok buses. Keeping your your wallet or purse in a money belt can be helpful at preventing the the thieves.”

Bangkok’s culture dates back to many centuries that it is said that archeological excavations in the area north of Nakorn Ratchasima indicate that there were people living here over 4000 years ago

The Bangkokians are a bunch of warm and friendly people, usually too polite to show offense. Yet, as with any nation, there are borders of behavior that should and should not be crossed. They take great pride in their monarchy. Visitors are well-advised to respect the reverence in which devoted Bangkokians hold their royal family. The Buddhist religion is considered sacred by Bangkokians. Monks, temples, and Buddha images are everywhere and most of the people treat them with great respect. It is expected that appropriate clothing be worn in temples, and shoes removed when entering certain areas in the temples.

For Bangkokians, the maintenance of surface calm and harmony is crucial. Loss of temper, arguing, or direct criticism are best avoided among them, because they feel it serves little purpose in any case. The famous wai is a used as a gesture for both greeting and respect. Wai requires the person to use both of his hands as if praying in front of his face. In general, it is considered to be a mark of respect to try to keep the head at a lower level than that of a senior or older person when talking to or passing them. On entering a private chamber or house, it is customary to remove your shoes. The polite form of address when talking to or about people of similar or older age are to use the title “Khun” and the person’s first name.

Many Bangkokians will be too polite to comment on behaviour that is disrespectful of a fellow Bangkokian, but you should be aware that it is still offensive. Looks and appearances are important to Bangkokians. When meeting them, dressing smartly, or at least appropriately, reflects the degree of respect you hold for them.

The capital city of Thailand – Bangkok is one of the world’s biggest cities as well as the top among the Asia’s hotspots. With its attractions that are a blend of traditional and modern, Bangkok has not only lured the people touring the destination but also has attracted many foreigners to stay here permanently.

The major draw of the city is undoubtedly its breathtaking palaces, each of which is much favored for its incredible architecture and craftsmanship. Most popular among the palaces in the city is probably Chitralada, sprawling over an area of about 250 acres of lush green area. The palace once served as the summer residence of King Chulalongkorn, and now it is home to a range of awesome attractions including park with fountain graced with Baroque figures in each of its corner. Also, found within the palace grounds are a school, which was primarily opened for the education purposes of the children of royal family.

Equally fabulous is the region’s temples whose number comes to more than 400. Among which perhaps the most prominent is Wat Phra Kaeo, found within the grounds of the Grand Palace. An emerald statue of Lord Buddha in mediating posture, dating back to the 15th century can be seen here. A visit to such ancient temples in the region as Wat Pho – the oldest as well as the largest temple in the city, Wat Tramit boasting of the largest solid gold image of Buddha in a sitting mediating posture with a calm smile, and Wat Arun whose highlight is an interesting monument named Phra Sumen – an octagonal shaped structure, would be a great experience.

In order to get a glimpse on the city’s splendid as well as delightful historical past, it would be great to take a tour to the museums in the region such as Bangkok Folk Museum with interesting exhibits such as traditional household artifacts, antiques, and items once used for ceremonies; the National Museum with the displays of the Neolithic era; and Prasart Museum with amazing artifacts of the past. Attractions in Bangkok also cover the largest crocodile farm in the world, with more than 30,000 crocodiles. Above all, Bangkok is a kid’s friendly destination and provides a host of options for them in the form of amusement parks consisting of thrilling slides and equipments. Apart from these, the city boasts of excellent nightlife and dining options.

When comes to accommodation, Bangkok has superb choices to satisfy every taste and pocket. Options are incredible for well-heeled, with a continuum of luxury hotels. Majority of the luxury hotels are located within easy reach of almost all attractions and facilities in the region. Usually, these hotels can cater to every level of travelers, no matter it is a business traveler, leisurely traveler, or honeymooners.

For business people and top executives, many of the luxury hotels come with superb conference facilities for conducting seminars and meetings. Likewise, for travelers who are tired after a day’s sightseeing or enjoyment of a myriad of activities in the city, these hotels make available pampering spa treatment for ultimate relaxation. In addition, for travelers seeking sports and leisure, many of them provide facilities such as Jacuzzi, fitness center, and swimming pool.

The rooms available in luxury hotels are mostly elegantly appointed with such top end amenities as highly comfortable beds, satellite television, air-conditioning, AM/FM alarm clock, mini bar, safe deposit box, Wi-Fi high speed internet access, soundproof system, and international direct dial. Similarly, dining options available in majority of the upscale hotels are simply amazing with a variety of restaurants and bars, serving a delightful array of cuisines, beverages, and an extensive list of wine.

I visit a lot of Thailand Forums and very often a newbies will ask if he should go to Bangkok or Pattaya or both. He will also want to know how long he should stay at each place – if he goes to both. As a season traveler to Thailand for over 30 years, I tend to be a bit cynical and advise most to just go straight to Pattaya. But, there are arguments to be made to stop by and visit Bangkok for a few days too. I have toned down my advice a bit usually tell the newbie to visit Bangkok for 2 to 3 days at the beginning of his trip and then spend the rest of the 2 or 3 weeks in Pattaya. Everyone should see Bangkok at least once.

There is a lot to see in Bangkok if you can ever get to where you want to go. Traffic is usually moving along at a snail’s pace and the meter in the taxi keeps ticking away. Walking around is hot and the streets are lined with vendors that block the sidewalk and will try any tactic to get you to stop and buy something from their stall. And, if you are walking around at night, you will have to watch out for the lady-boys and the muggers (as you would in almost any large city). Once you suffer taxis and heat, there are numerous clubs, bars, and restaurants that would rival the best anywhere in the world. With prices being extremely low (despite the strengthening of the Baht), you can have a great night out on the town for a minimal amount of money. Throw in inexpensive hotels, excellent shopping, and the friendliest people in the world, and you will have an experience unlike any you have ever had. Then, on your second visit to Thailand, you can just go straight to Pattaya.
